Ahem.
Unless if you've been living under a rock, you've probably heard about the video game called Undertale, which has received accolades and acclaim galore. A few weeks ago, I finished a True Pacifist Run and definitely thought the game play was worthwhile, but, to be honest, I couldn't really understand all the hype about the storyline. According to my brother, Flowey's desire to be loved with the same love that all of the supporting characters show Frisk in the final battle is supposed to be the real feels killer...you know, like: "Asriel just wanted to be loved! He was only a boy! He just wanted to be able to feel something again... Anything!"
Yadda yadda yadda...
Believe it or not, 13% of all people (according to the Myers-Briggs Test Indicator) or 4% of all Americans (according to research by Martha Stout) have at least once in their life felt the same way as Asriel. From the way I understand it, Asriel as Flowey is simply a sociopath who hasn't yet learned to come to terms with his differences, a struggle exacerbated by the surplus of very mature and compassionate creatures around him. It's not that we (and I say "we" because, by all tests and measurements, I'm apparently a pretty severe sociopath as an ENTJ) are really incapable of feeling love; it's just that we have to rephrase our definition of love.
In a True Genocide Run, Flowey shows considerable endearment for Frisk, as noted by the presence of his vines and the lack of puzzles and enemies to battle. He's taking care of Frisk, aiding him along his journey, and smoothing his path out. In the end, he asks to team up with Frisk. Isn't that love and friendship? Flowey definitely can both feel and show love; he just has a hard time realizing that his love is exhibited and felt differently from the sappy, tearful love of his parents.
Anyway, what does that whole musing have to do with writing?
Inspiration, ladies and gentlemen.

A SOCIOPATH IN LOVE...
is more dangerous than a psychopath on a killing spree. manipulation, pathological lying - nothing is out of the game for us. rarely, if ever, do we feel so charmed and incapable of what is typically easy: flirting, making bonds, getting close. even more rarely do we desire to love, realizing that our smooth and boring days could be different if ever we learned how be emotional and vulnerable. thus, the fear of loss is great, and our desperation, cunning, and lack of scruples are even more noticeable than on average.
we will stop at nothing to leech from the especially desirable prey of our hearts' wants, and, to be fair, our dear loves are not stupid; we are merely inherently likable. those moments of penetrating eye contact, the frequent and thoughtful gifts and letters, the swift and romantic thrill - which human could resist?
in the end, unless if we have fallen for one of our own (which happens more often than you'd think), we win. our partners give us what we want, expressing love at our request in measures of far more fervency than our own. when we again are bored with the dull domestic life and habits of our treasured one, we drop, leave, and move on mercilessly - not because we are so cruel in our minds, but because we would feel insane otherwise. is it bloodthirsty of a lion to kill and devour its meal when, if it attempted to digest vegetables, it would starve?
of course not.
don't be silly.
the real danger of a sociopath in love is not that we leave broken hearts. other normal humans do so quite often, and our speedy methods tend to be more recoverable than a drawn-out, longterm ordeal. no, the true issue is that, for an evanescent moment of terror, we want to be able to feel the same way we see you feel. when you wake us up with morning kisses, when you try so hard to understand a world that you will never come close to comprehending, when you draw us near and whisper, "i love you," for a moment, there is a flicker of hope, a confused feeling, a painful and sad and incredibly comforting emotion.
i want to love.
i want to whisper, "i love you too," and mean it. i want to let you into my mind with the intention of you actually empathizing the complexity and duplicity i have within. i've been alone in this gray, tedious existence for too long, and i want those morning kisses to both last and matter.
but i cannot.
so i move on, hoping that, just one more time, i can feel that way again.

Quite possibly coming to a character near you. (I like this character type and think it could make for a fun short story if I ever get stuck on Where The Broken Things Are and need some time off to let ideas cook in the thinker. :))
