Pricing

Apparently, there's way more to self-publishing than I first imagined.

It figures, though.  I'm a blog author.  I type stuff out, glance over it for glaring punctuation and grammatical errors, hit "publish", and - WHAM - my post is out in the world for everyone to read.  On a day when I suffer from writer's block, it takes me an hour per post.

Unfortunately, with actual books (even if said books are fictional novelettes), publishing takes a little bit (hehe, a lottle bit) more time and effort for formatting, font choices, and - ugh ugh ugh - cover design.  One of the biggest issues that I've been musing over is book pricing and the differences between 99 cent books, 98 cent books, and 97 cent books.

I know, I know, one cent differences.
Think it's absurd?
Hold your laughter.

As I've been reading through "Kindle Publishing Gold: How to Make Money Online Self-Publishing" by R.L. Adams, I've realized that there are huge psychological aspects behind these three prices.  Summarized from Adams' book, here's my best interpretation of these three prices' deeper meaning.

~ ~ ~

99 CENTS:
Most people know this little secret.  Price your books at 99 cents and people will buy because they automatically tend to ignore the stuff after the decimal point.  (You know, like that one time that you bought that pint of ice cream for $4.99 and thought you were getting a steal - fifty cents per half cup of ice cream! - only to realize that you actually bought a pint of a vanilla-flavored brain freeze for five whopping bucks.)
However, even though people know this secret, no one really seems to be objecting to it.  According to studies presented in Adams' book, 60.7% people will still prefer to buy products that end with the number 9.

98 CENTS:
Ooo, we just got one cent cheaper!  Now we're hitting the real discounts!
Heheh.
Actually, since people ignore the stuff after the decimal point, they're still ignoring the one extra cent markdown.  That is, unless if your target audience is extraordinarily price-sensitive, like Wal-Mart's customers are.

97 CENTS:
Strangely enough, people do tend to notice the three cent discount (97) even if they don't notice the two cent discount (98), simply because 97 cents is a clear break-away from the traditional 99 cents and the less-traditional-but-still-frequent 98 cents.
However, this attention isn't necessarily good.  97 cents implies that the author is cunningly calculating and that the book price is a little too exact.  Some people might be turned away by that sort of forethought, feeling as if they're walking into a pricing trap.

~ ~ ~

Intriguing, isn't it?

Anyway, with all of this help, I've decided that the price for The Immortals is to be CHEAP dollars and INEXPENSIVE cents...which, in more or less words...is to say I haven't decided yet.  (No more than two dollars, anyway.  :P)

Last note: R.L. Adams' book is a fantastic, practical read for amateur authors like me.  If you've got a finished work and want to throw it into the internet world just to see how it does, I would highly advise that you buy his novel (which is free on the Kindle, I believe).

And, as always--

Skain's Playlist - Let Me Know (BTS)

Ever have one of those days where you start writing a blog post, but you can't seem to stop journaling your feels into your blog post even when you know that no one reading your writing blog cares to read about how you feel ("Gosh, Clove, make a personal blog if you want to talk about yourself."), so you delete your entire post and start over a half bajillion times?

Yeah, having one of those days today.  >.<

Anyway, I'll get to the point: recently, I've been compiling a list of songs that would fit my characters, as I normally do.  (Music and writing?  What could be better?)  One of my favorite "Skain" songs is Let Me Know by Bangtan Boys.
I'd imagine it'd play at the end of the story, when Skain has been "unfaithful" to Silvia, has literally stabbed her in the back, and has disappeared off the face of the earth - all for the sake of saving her from himself.  (To the people who read my first draft, yes, things have gotten much more drastic, hehe.)

In the epilogue, Skain comes back to her eventually and wants to know how she feels after all that he did.

And thus:

On top of this ending tune,
I am standing here alone.
Now tell me that it’s over.
Let me know.

Suddenly, in my eyes, rain wells up.
You well up.
I see you even when I breathe.
Love blooms like cherry blossoms
but burns and becomes ashes.
Hey, girl, I know
the conclusion you made by yourself,
your hand, your body, your body heat
that was hotter than the equator.

I’m still here on repeat on top of the disappeared tune.
I’m turning by myself on top of this music that has ended.

On top of this ending tune,
I am standing here alone.
Now tell me that it’s over.
Let me know.

Girl, let me know.
Girl, let me know.
Although I already know everything is over,
although you’re over me,
girl, let me know.
Girl, let me know.
Girl, let me know.
Tell me something.

I just wanna know, know, know.
I just wanna know, know, know.
My lingering feelings are trying to withstand the end,
so please tell me something.
Girl, let me know.

The promises we made disappeared
with the time we spent together.
The dominos have fallen with our breakup
like Juliet and Romeo.

Did I like you too much?
The heat between me and you won’t cool down.

Now I look back at the film with you,
too early to do anything by thinking of you.
You took away my stars at night,
my sun at day,
only leaving me with the darkness
of a single cold cloud.

If there are hellos,
then there’s bound to be goodbyes?
Never ever.

I don’t care about that,
I don’t want to stick to that,
I’ll turn away, hypnotizing myself.

Maybe we’re all just a bunch of fools.
Everyone lives with a love that has come to an end.
It’s not that I still have feelings for you.
I know we can’t work out,
but why does it feel like I’m having indigestion?
As if my insides will explode...
Cries come up my throat,
making me throw up.
In my imagination, I fight with you,
make up with you, and understand you.

Your hand gestures, your eyes:
they are faded but not gone.

Why won’t it go away?
Why won’t it go away?
Why won’t it go away?

Moral of the story?  ENTJs (that'd be Skain and me) have some of the highest marital satisfaction of all types, not because we just love everyone so much but because we're stubborn as diamonnnds.

Wahaha, I'm so psyched for this story, guys!  :D

Writing challenge #6

Roar.

Jace here.

Yeah, yeah, just because I'm writing, you're worried something happened to Clove again.  Well, worry not, anxious mortals.  She just got back from a week at a girls' camp where she was working as a team leader (i.e. as a care-taker/nurse/maid/launderer/slave for about thirty needy, garrulous, yet, according to Clove, "cute" seven to eleven year old female mortals).  Currently, she's understandably a bit sleepy-weepy-thank-heaven-she's-leaving-Jacey-aloney, so, magnanimous benefactor that I am, I thought I might help her out and do a bit of her work while she's got her feet kicked up at the couch.

All is good, friends.

(Back to Clove, guys.  Just as extra reassurance, I've not actually fallen asleep and left my troublesome elf to storm this quadrant of the internet galaxy by himself, despite what he claims.  I just thought it'd be fun to let Jace have a go at writing again.  Really, please don't be concerned; I have a taser right next to me in case if things get out of hand--)

Hey, gimme.
Mine.
My laptop.
Out of my post, mortal.
You promised me I could do your writing challenges from now on, and, if you keep interrupting me, it'll take me until doomsday to finish.

Now back to business.

For your sixth writing challenge, Clove wants you to give her your best, most original pick-up lines and matching anti-pick-up lines, which she will then plagiarize (with your permission, which isn't plagiarism, but, hey) and use in her own writing.  Of course, right now, you might be asking: how in the world was Clove born so uncreative that she can't even come up with her own writing?

Simple.
Negative, dominant-trait breeding.  >:P

Now, let's see.  Terms and conditions.  These pick-up lines and anti-pick-up lines will preferably be ones not found on the internet.  Of course, if you find a really good one via Google that isn't obviously well-known, that'll be fine too.  If you give her one that she likes (i.e. one that is really snarky, mean, and sarcastic) and if she gets your permission to use it, she'll put it in her story and post the scene in which she includes your lines.

Woo.  Big prizes for everyone.

(*sighs*  Clove again.  You're terrible at this, Jace.  I'm not asking for the lines because I can't come up with any on my own.  Trust me, at the ripe old age of sixteen, when people are regularly surprised for whatever reason that - behold and indeed and alas - I'm not actually twenty-one, I've voiced my share of relational stiff-arms.  No, I'm asking because I think everyone in my audience is particularly creative and intellectual, and I want to see what awesomeness we've got out there.  This isn't an obligation; it's a fun chance for my readers to strut their ingenious grey matter a little.)

Ten bucks says no one comments.

(Are you serious?  =.=)

Absolutely.

(>.>  Your loss, buddy.)

Hue hue, well, you heard the harridan.  Help fund the "Jace Has Pocket Money Society" by NOT commenting with your best pick-up line and matching anti-pick-up line!

DON'T write on!

Guys, I literally just sat here for ten minutes...

The word I was trying to think of was "regrettably."
The words I kept thinking of were like, "totally-not-cooly" and "meh-ly" and "ugh-ly."

Clearly, I've been on vacation for too long.

#6, written 6/3/2015 - SILVIA (in-depth bio)

This one's for Silvia.  :)  Also, fair warning: if you read my old copy of DWBSN, you know Silvia as Deidre who was a carbon copy of Katniss Everdeen (because, hahahahahahahaha, yeahhh, immature thirteen year old me).  In this rework, she is very different from Deidre, still stubborn and sarcastic but not at all uncaring, obnoxious, or apathetic.

~ ~ ~

1. What is this character's greatest flaw?
Silvia is too idealistic.  Since she's a fairly-sheltered teenage author and fangirl, she has a natural disconnect to the cruelties of this world, some of which come as a shock to her when she is impacted by them first-hand throughout the story.  In addition, her failure to realize how hard this life is also leads her to be somewhat needy and complaining about minor difficulties.

2. What is this character's greatest asset?
When she tries, Silvia is fantastic at drawing out the best out of people, getting into jaded and tough hearts (Skain) and encouraging, mending, and empathizing with them.

3. What music does this character sing to when no one else is around?
Silvia loves romance ballads and musicals, which is another display of her idealistic thinking.  In line with her INFP nature, though, she also has a hidden obsession with dark, almost-screamo rock bands like Red, Panic! at the Disco, and Evanescence.

4. Name this character's favorite person.
At the beginning of the story, Silvia's favorite person is probably either her ENFP best friend Dani (shout-out to my real life best friend) or her ENTP mom, the former of whom she loves for her similar idealistic thinking, the latter of whom she admires for her gutsiness and intelligence.  However, as soon as she meets Skain, she falls into "love at first sight" and knows "he's the one."

5. What is this character's secret wish?
Silvia's secret wish is to become a best selling author and to tour the world anonymously while enjoying the tastes, colors, and habits of cultures and writing.  However, because Silvia will spaz about her writing to anyone willing to listen, this wish probably can't be considered "secret."

6. What is this character's proudest achievement?
One of Silvia's stories was once published in the local newspaper.  She framed that newspaper.  :3

7. What is this character's greatest fear?
Above all else, Silvia is deathly afraid that someone will force her to lock away her individual thoughts and ideas.  This is one of the reasons why, when she finds out that Skain is being emotionally abused, she becomes irrationally angry at Skain's abusers.
"Everyone has the right to speak out about what they believe in," she says.

8. Describe this character's most devastating moment.
As every author, including Silvia, knows well, the accidental deletion of a lot of writing is ruinous.  However, while this was her most devastating moment before she met Skain, she comes across multiple devastating moments after she meets Skain, like when he tells her about his predicament or when she finds out that he and another girl are an item or when he stabs her in the back - literally - and "leaves her to die."  Muahahaha.

9. Does this character have an obsession?  Name it.
Yes.  Her current story, including a dreamy, dark-haired prince named Casimir, is the ultimate obsession of her life.

10. What is this character's worst nightmare?
Silvia's worst dreams include her close friends and family acting negatively or critically towards her and her story.  When she meets Skain, her nightmares only change to include him in the condescending party.

11. Where does this character fall in birth order?  What effect does this have?
Silvia is the youngest of three.  Her older two siblings are in college.  As a result, she's very independent, spoiled, and yet really cute in her attitude (i.e. she has very little ego that she feels she needs to preserve or glorify).

12. Describe this character's bedroom.  Include three cherished items.
Silvia's room is a feminine pigsty: floral, pastel clothes are thrown everywhere, the walls are covered with posters of her favorite quotes, and her bookshelves are overflowing with novels and dried flowers.  She also has a desk and a monitor where she does most of her writing.  As for her cherished items, Silvia really likes her vintage copy of Pride and Prejudice, her painted, stone tea-mug which she got on a trip to Tokyo, and her floral converse shoes.

13. If this character had to live in seclusion for six months, what items would he bring?
She'd bring her story and a music player, her tea mug and all the equipment necessary to make tea, her favorite pillow and blanket for snuggling, and as many books as she could.  Oh, and she'd be the happiest she has ever been in her life.

14. What angers this character?
Social injustice, mundane work, rules, decision making, and being forced to socialize with people who are blunt and openly disrespectful are high on her list.  However, she also gets mad when people choose to ignore her or are dispassionate towards her, feeling that she should elicit at least some response from fellow humans.

15. What calms this character?
Writing, tea, and being alone with music blaring her thoughts out of her brain.

16. What wakes this character in the middle of the night?
Nothing, basically.  Silvia sleeps like a rock.  However, right before she's about to fall asleep, she often is struck by the muses, leaps out of bed, and writes for another two or three hours.

17. How would a stranger describe this character?
"Naive."  "Living in her own world."  "The girl with the fangirl Tumblr blog."  "Cute."  "Emotional."

18. How would a dear friend or relative describe this character?
"Blessed with great circumstances."  "Artistic."  "Easily hurt."

19. What is this character's most noticeable physical attribute?
One part of Deidre that I did transfer over to Silvia when I started this rework is her physical appearance: she still has tan hair, a slender build, and very conspicuous green eyes.

20. Write one additional thing about your character.
Well, I know I'm not supposed to pick favorites between my little writing children, but I've got to admit that I like Skain much more than I like Silvia.  While Skain is the embodiment of me, Silvia is only kind of me, outside of myself.  She's an Fi, which is my currently-developing inferior function, so I'm pouring all of my strange, rare spurts of romantic dreaminess into her and channelling my normal self into Skain.  All the same, I hope you like her as much as you like the rest of my cast of characters; she really is great in her own way.  :)

#5, written 6/2/2015 - SKAIN (in-depth bio)

My older brother once sent me a character questionnaire that is floating around on the internet somewhere.  I'm picking, from those 45 listed questions, the applicable ones and then answering them.  Hopefully, this will provide some insight into one of my lovely protagonists and a nice reference for me, should I ever need it.  So, without further ado, here we go~  :)

~ ~ ~

1. What is this character's greatest flaw?
Skain thinks he can do everything.  By nature, he's a stubborn character, but he falsely believes that he can win anything, save anyone, and achieve all goals without sacrifice if he just puts in enough determination and practice.  This is a flaw which he's forced to face during the climax of my story.

2. What is this character's greatest asset?
Almost ironically, because Skain is so hard-headed, he also refuses to move on from a problem until he has solved it, which has taught him to be a creative, out-of-the-box thinker and an honest, strong-willed leader.

3. What music does this character sing to when no one else is around?
Hehe, Skain's basically the male, fictional copy of me, so he listens to trap (TroiBoi/Vanic) and unique underground rappers (Grieves/K.Flay).  Because of his little sister, he also has developed a tolerance for (i.e. a secret enjoyment of) classical piano music, mostly Chopin and Rachmaninoff.

4. Name this character's favorite person.
Brielle.  His little sister.  (For those of you who read my old copy, Brielle replaces Morgan, but they're basically nothing alike.  Brielle appears more infrequently in the actually story than Morgan, but she simultaneously plays a much more significant role.)

5. What is this character's secret wish?
Skain wants to run away from the urban city to which he's tied and live in the countryside next to a lake with his little sister, reading, cultivating a garden, and living a simple, uncomplicated life.

6. What is this character's proudest achievement?
Interestingly enough, Skain has an entrepreneur's future-oriented mindset.  He doesn't pause to consider his victories, always pressing on towards the next "must-do" in life.

7. What is this character's greatest fear?
Skain is constantly afraid that his best friend and last remaining family member, Brielle, will die or suffer harm at the hand of Antony, the main antagonist.  However, he is also mildly phobic of deep water and fire, due to some unpleasant experiences with both elements.

8. Describe this character's most devastating moment.
This would be when twelve-year-old Skain agreed to a bargain with an INTJ police chief named Heinrich that (1.) allowed Brielle to receive the medical treatment and support that she needed, (2.) forced Skain into an extensive curriculum created by the Heinrich, and (3.) opened Skain up for future emotional abuse.  Obviously, kid-Skain didn't know it at the time, but he was basically selling his freedom away, and he regrets his decision immensely.

9. Does this character have an obsession?  Name it.
Yes.  Yes, he does.  Her name is Silvia Thornton, and she's an INFP queen.

10. What is this character's worst nightmare?
At the beginning of the story, Skain dreams of losing Brielle.  However, as the story progresses and as his relationship with Silvia grows shaky and unhealthy, he has nightmares of Silvia, who almost always appears frowning or with her back turned to him.  As a result, despite their relational rift, he always faced towards her and smiles at her when they're together, even if they're not talking and/or on opposite sides of the room.
"Sure," he says, "I'm miserable when we're together, but I'm more sick of her looking so unhappy in my dreams.  I wake up more exhausted than if I hadn't slept, and...I don't want the same to happen to her.  So I smile, even if hurts.  That way, she can only remember me looking happily at her in her dreams."

11. Where does this character fall in birth order?  What effect does this have?
Skain is first-born.  Therefore, he's very protective, defensive, and charismatic.

12. Describe this character's bedroom.  Include three cherished items.
Skain's room, like my room, is a mix of cleanliness and disorder.  Most of the time, Skain doesn't make his bed, and he tends to push clothes off to the side so that he can efficiently do laundry all at once.  However, his desk space is perfectly clean, and he never lets trash or dust collect.  Out of all that he owns, Skain has three favorite items: one is a picture of him and Brielle, another is his pillow (because "pillow" means "sleep"), and the last is his self-altered, European-model flip-phone, which is a slim black rectangle with a stylus and highly important to him for practical reasons.

13. If this character had to live in seclusion for six months, what items would he bring?
Considering that "seclusion" means "no contact" and thus "no phone," he'd bring a punching bag and boxing gear for staying fit, an audio-recorder for any ingenious thoughts that might spawn during his time alone, a music-player, a video game device of some sort, and an interesting, fictional book.

14. What angers this character?
Any major break in his premeditated plans, threats against Brielle, and incompetency or a lack of intelligence in general.

15. What calms this character?
Music and physical contact, mostly.  However, never underestimate the power of a potent, sugary root beer float.  :3  That drink literally saved my skin once upon a time, and it always helps Skain to get some endorphins in his brain too.  x)

16. What wakes this character in the middle of the night?
Thanks to his extensive training, most changes in environment will arouse Skain to at least a conscious haze.  However, his nightmares also take huge parts in waking him up.

17. How would a stranger describe this character?
In three words: "moody," "purposeful," and "intense."  (I might also add that the latter of which is a word that is sadly becoming drained of its meaning by the profusion of romance novels in the world and needing some clarity.  Skain's intensity is an intensity that surpasses the simplistic, animal intent found in the main male characters of typical romance garbage; you can feel his dense aura coming off of him.)

18. How would a dear friend or relative describe this character?
In three words: "adorkable," "indefatigable," and "complicated."

19. What is this character's most noticeable physical attribute?
Skain has a pretty definitive build: deep collarbones, a sharp adam's apple, and a clear jawline.  If you passed him on the street, you'd probably notice those first.

20. Write one additional thing about your character.
Guys, I really, really hope you like this new version of Skain (and of DWBSN as a whole, I guess).  Earnest to goodness, he's exactly like me, an outlet for all of the rough experiences I've had in the last sixteen or so months, and I hope you receive him with much love.  :)

#4, written 6/1/2015 - A Rose for A Wink

Roses are red
Violets are blue
You winked again.
Now what to do?

I will not think
of future days
or act like I
could be okay

I must not sleep
I should not dream --
for you are not
yet next to me

and, more, oh love,
I'm scared of this:
of losing you
of all my sins

for I have spilt
your rose-red blood,
my violet tears.

What have I done?

-- I've sinned too much.

This guilt surely
can be remised
by vows only --

-- but you hate ties,
so I'm a weed
to snag you down
to thorny me.

Why try to keep
that which I've known
will leave for good
when we're all grown?

Just, as I said:

-- remember me --

a fading rose,
as you, dear, leave.

I will not let
pain master me,
so break my heart.
I'll bloom freely.

These final storms
will prove to us
how well we've learned
to prune our lust.

-- yes.

Roses are red,
violets are blue and --

Friend.

If you want,
I'll wait for you.

#3, written 5/31/2015 - Skain's Team

In my rework of DWBSN, I'm basically scrapping my cartoon-y characters from before and recasting accordingly.  For now, I want to introduce just Skain's team, a group of his most loyal friends, mentors, and soul-siblings.

TONI - FEMALE EXFP
Age: 36
Eye color: Dark brown
Hair: Dyed maroon, wavy pixie-cut
Height: 5'6"
Race: African American
Role: Toni is a bar-owner.  In addition to providing a secure meeting place for Skain's team, she also taught him most of what he knows about dealing with tricky social interactions and empathizing (or faking empathy) with closed-off hearts.  Skain admits that she's kind of like the spunky aunt that he never had.
Weapon of choice: Dual-pistols.  Nothing fancy.  After all, Toni's anger is enough to instill fear into most of the weaker souls on the earth anyway.
Fashion: Toni is often in her typical bartender outfit, but, when off work, she sports a pretty daring style for a pretty hefty body: dark jean capris and low-cut shirts that display her generous build.
Other notes: My male-friend's mother, who's the administrator of my one-day school, is named Toni.  She's got a pretty forceful aura and has an interesting bipolar personality (flashing temper and incredible sweetness) that I really wanted to capture in my story.

KELSEY - FEMALE INFX
Age: 20
Eye color: Light brown
Hair: Carrot, long and curly, decorated often with a flower chain
Height: 5'4"
Race: American
Role: Kelsey is one of Skain's childhood friends.  Accordingly, she's one of the few who really connects to him on an emotional level and can keep him steady when he's acting irrational or dangerously.  Despite this, Skain never really shows any romantic attraction to her, somewhat because he knows it'd be weird changing the dynamic of a platonic relationship after so long, somewhat because he's fearful of Jessie wrath.
Weapon of choice: Diplomacy, pure and simple.  If push comes to shove, though, seduction and a dagger will also work just as well.
Fashion: Kelsey loves all things floral, as well as pastel colors like beige, pink, and sky blue.  Often, she'll wear high-low skirts or sundresses, but, when on a mission for Skain, she gets down to business with practical cargo pants and a loose navy blue tank-top.
Other notes: I actually know an INFJ Kelsey in real life.  She's got such an intriguing aura, seemingly enriching the air around her with fairy charm and fondling every heart she touches with a naive and masterful care.  Unlike the real-life Kelsey that I know, however, Skain's Kelsey is more prone to becoming the dark INFJ, an NF who will do present evil for the sake of future good.

JESSIE - MALE ESTP
Age: 20
Eye color: Light brown
Hair: Carrot, mullet, held back with a bandana
Height: 6'0"
Race: American
Role: Jessie is Kelsey's fraternal twin brother.  Unlike his NF sister, though, he can't really connect to Skain emotionally, and he's not good at voicing how he feels.  Consequently, out of everyone in Skain's team, Jessie tends to fight with Skain the most, due to a communication failure between them.  Most of the time, though, Skain just enjoys Jessie's sense of humor, raw spontaneity, and ingenious ideas.
Weapon of choice: Shotgun and a motorcycle.  Jessie is the group's driver.
Fashion: Jessie loves leather jackets, combat boots, and anything flashy that shows off his muscular build.
Other notes: I actually know only one other ESTPs in real life, and he and I only took Economics together for one semester, so this is probably going to be about as fun as it gets in terms of creative writing.  x)

OSAKA - MALE ESTJ
Age: 34
Eye color: Black
Hair: Black, cut like Shinra from Durarara!
Height: 5'10"
Race: Japanese
Role: Osaka is a street doctor who Skain has gotten to know reaaally well - thanks to Skain's knack for getting injured.  He also taught Skain a good bit about first-aid, chemistry, and emergency surgery.  In the story, Skain and Osaka seem to have a very strong, compatible relationship, and some of the other team members are wary of their ability to create impressive strategies.
Weapon of choice: Medical implements and compounds.  Osaka's into demolition.
Fashion: What fashion.  =.=  Osaka lives in his lab coat.
Other notes: The name "Osaka" means "from the city of industry" in Japanese and is consequently really fitting, but "Osaka" is still a female Japanese name.  x)  Thus, out of all the names present here, Osaka's is the most likely to change.  I'm open to suggestions!  :)

LANCE - MALE ISTP
Age: 48
Eye color: Typical light blue
Hair: Salt and pepper, cut like Lehm from Jormungand
Height: 6'2"
Race: Russian and Polish roots
Role: Lance is an ex-military officer, who struggled with PTSD and homelessness until Skain found him fighting off muggers and recruited him.  Even then, Lance is still almost always smoking, and he fades in to the group for a mission and out of the group at all other times.  Skain is the only one who really checks in on him, mostly just to make sure he's still alive.
Weapon of choice: Sniper rifle.  Lance is the gunman of the group.  Both he and Jessie can wield just about anything given to them.
Fashion: Flannel shirts and loose, thin pants when off a mission; grey v-neck shirt and cargo pants when on a mission.
Other notes: One of my childhood adult-friends is named Lance, a southern boy but highly-skilled and respectable man.  Interestingly, real-life Lance has had a mixed-up past and has had to do some extra work to hide himself from old associates, which you gotta admit is pretty epic.  :3

MITCH - MALE ISTP
Age: 19
Eye color: Nearly black
Hair: Nearly black, practical cut: slightly longer and almost curled at the nape and parted neatly at the side
Height: 6'1"
Race: European mix
Role: Mitch is Skain's best friend.  They've known each other for as long as they can remember living and consequently share the same ideals and sense of humor.  Throughout the story, it's revealed that Mitch has a much more trusting relationship with Skain than any of the other members do, as Mitch repeatedly hides details about Skain's life from the others.
Weapon of choice: Martial arts.  However, Mitch, even without the training that Jessie and Lance have, can utilize anything in his surroundings to an advantage: bottles, chairs, walls, etc.
Fashion: Mitch prefers dark colors and practicality in his garb: loose t-shirts and camouflage pants with an assortment of knives clipped in the pockets.  Despite his rather normal appearance, though, he's never seen without a military dog-tag that says his name is "[Bleep] You," an inside joke between Mitch and Skain.
Other notes: I'm really tempted to hint at Kelsey x Mitch in my story, but I'm undecided right now.  Yea or nay?

Also, just in comparison:

SKAIN - MALE ENTJ
Age: 18 (nearly 19)
Eye color: All the shades of Tiger's Eye
Hair: Dark ebony, long and brushed forward like Dominik from The Suicide Room
Height: 6'0"
Race: Unknown, but seems to include some German roots
Role: Main character...muahahah~
Weapon of choice: Combat knives and boxing.  Because Skain has always been the mind behind the operation, he doesn't put as much time into weapons training as he knows he should.  Still, a few jump-scare ambushes have incentivized him to keep his body fit for long-distance running and grappling.
Fashion: Skain, despite his pervasive rationality, is somewhat obsessed with what he wears.  (You know, since he's the leader of the team, he should have some distinguishing airs about him and yadda yadda yadda.)  When given the choice, his style is similar to Mitch's with more flair: a utilitarian black jacket, metal-spiked shoes, a variety of steel and corded bracelets, etc., but he also knows how to dress formally, due to other influences in his life.

#2, written 5/30/2015 - Loneliness

What is it about loneliness that is so unbearable?

Anger, I can handle.  If found in a friend, I can easily rationalize for her poor behavior.  If found in myself, all that is required is a brief sprint or a bit of time alone before the emotion fades.  Fear is no different.  For a while, one might be afraid of an element or an entity, but familiarity - exposure and research - breeds contempt.  Hunger, anxiety, depression - I can cope.  Greed, confusion, curiosity - I have learned to tolerate or eliminate with swift precision.

But loneliness...

Loneliness.

Loneliness, the untouchable leech that threatens to bleed the strongest of humans.  Loneliness, the inexpressible quality that, perhaps, threatens to strangle the strong more than the weak.  After all, being the best and being relatable, by definition, do not coincide.  Isn't singling yourself out through sole victory in life a guarantee that loneliness will have free reign in your heart?

What an utter shame, then, that every teacher and textbook in my life has encouraged me, taught me, and disciplined me to outperform competition.  What a shame that I've spent more time learning physical chemistry, articulate logic, and mathematical algorithms than I've spent in mastering the art of empathy.

Loneliness.

What can a soul do against it?  Even if one were to spend time with legions of talkative and wonderfully interesting people, loneliness can still, with excruciating dark magic, penetrate and drain a normally-energetic host.  Distractions fail; compartmentalization is impossible.  Even disappearing from reality through sleep or drink only leads to an even keener awakening the next morning.

Someone tell me: what is it about loneliness that crushes me so easily?  Even the common event of a crying child being taken from her mother's arms into a nursery sends shivers of terror down my spine.  It affects me too painfully; I relate too vibrantly to the slightest display of separation anxiety.

Maybe he was right: I've just lost too much, haven't I?  Too many times, I've been torn away from the soul I've loved: "a cut and dried routine."  For too long, I've spent my life in the middle of two worlds.  This infectious disease of solitude is starting to prove to me that I'm really not as strong as I thought I was, getting under my skin, suppressing my passionate dreams for the future...

What an utter shame...

This was my fault in the first place.

#1, written 5/29/2015 - Refined Her

Well, I did write on vacation (contrary to my earlier post, in which I said I wouldn't have a writing obligation on vacation ever again).  However, I didn't write one post every day (contrary to this post, in which I said I would) because I was highly inspired to write my actual story (DWBSN rework).

In other words, I need to get my obligations figured out.
Heh heh heh.

Anyway, starting with this post, I'll be putting up the posts that I did write (which all ended up being an amalgamation of character bios that I've been wanting to do for a while and muses), one per day as usual.  Hope you enjoy!

She's everything that attracts me: dark, expansive, and unsearchable, flashing by with ruminative white noise and hiding stigmas of poverty and crime under exquisite stars of beauty.  I love her game; I love how she presents her glory upfront and hides her disgrace beneath, the quintessential hostess with no doubts and no struggles.

In a better world, though, I've wished that she would truly be the entity that she claims she is.

I've watched her from afar often, always lulled by her graceful stature.  At first, I just enjoyed watching her blink and move by me, her black velvet dress studded with diamonds.  She was melodic and eerily elegant, and I was magnetized by that charm.  Years later, though, I saw her filthy scars for what they were: jagged skin-pink swaths of shame, resignation, and oppressive power.  Physically, I wanted to run far away and escape confrontation, but, emotionally, I couldn't escape my desire for her heights and allures.

Now, after many painful confrontations - I'd rage at her, she'd strike my face with an icy hand - I think we're comfortably just friends, tied by mutual need and by empathy.

She tries to hide her sins; I do too.
But the fact is: she's still a sinner.

She's my city at night, the confinement of urban life.

One day, I want to live in her, to walk her cracked, dirty streets with my earbuds drowning out her cries, to change her from the inside out.  I'm no longer afraid of her moral dearth or of the mortal dross that collects in her darkest wrinkles; I want to feel her vibrancy and meet the soul-cells that flow through her veins, no matter how many of my own short-comings I'll have to reveal in the process.
One day, I want to be strong and majestic like she is, building my systems out of her flesh and expanding her with my own resources and abilities.  One day, I want to have seen her changed by me, so I can finally love at least my own part of refined her.
